The first LEGO Based Therapy manual describing LEGO therapy for improving social development in autism. It was created by Dr Dan LeGoff in 2006 to support replication research of the methodology, including the initial replication study by Gina Gomez de la Cuesta (nee Owens) and Sir Simon Baron Cohen at Cambridge University's Autism Research Centre in the UK.
This book by Dr Dan LeGoff offers insights into the case histories of the participants and events which led up to the first LEGO therapy for autism groups, the LEGO based therapy model, and the start of the international LBT movement. Initially published in 2017, based on events from 1995 - 2010.
After decades of doing LBT and teaching others how to start their own groups, Dr Dan LeGoff summarizes the theory, research, and current methods of LEGO Based Therapy, significantly expanding the information in the 2014 manual. This work provides the up-to-date description of LEGO therapy for autism and neurodiverse children, adolescents and adults.

“Being Autistic is Not a Behavior Problem” is a critique of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a widely used form of therapy for autistic children, which the author argues is not based on scientific research, developmental science, or ethical values. The book also discusses alternative methods of helping autistic children and their families, such as parent-directed early infancy strategies and peer-based Lego Clubs. The book aims to challenge the dominant narrative of autism as a disorder that needs to be fixed, and instead promote a perspective of autism as a form of neurodiversity that deserves respect and acceptance.
The 2023 updated manual has been translated into Spanish (shown above). The original manual has also been translated and published in Portuguese (next image), Italian, simplified Chinese, and Polish. The Spanish version is published by Akadia in Argentina. The Italian edition (and Italian edition of "Being Autistic is Not a Behavior Problem) is being published by Giovanni Fioriti (Rome).
This translation was done by LBT therapist and autism specialist, Michelli Miguel Freitas, through her educational consulting business, IEAC, which she runs with her husband Diogo Freitas.

LEGO-Based Therapy (LBT) and Dr. LeGoff have no business or financial affiliation with LEGO(R) Corporation or the LEGO(R) Group. Dr. LeGoff and the other providers of LBT are healthcare and educational professionals who use LEGO materials as the basis for LEGO Club groups which are intended to support and improve social development. This website and related publications are primarily intended for clinical, scientific, and educational purposes, not commercial ones.
LEGO-Based Therapy (LBT) is a semi-structured group therapy designed to improve social competence and communication through creative participation in a LEGO-based activities with peers. It is generally referred to as the LEGO Club, and participants are members. They share ideas and experiences, create together, and make friends. LBT is now used worldwide to support neurodiverse individuals to join in synergistic creativity.
Hundreds of chlid psychologists, healthcare providers, educators, and developmental therapists have started their own LEGO Clubs, as have business owners, administrators, and some parents. With some LEGO materials, and knowledge about the structure of the LEGO Club activities, most responsible adults can facilitate LEGO-Based Therapy.
Certifications are not required. The information about starting and running LEGO Club (LBT) groups is widely available, but the methods have evolved over time to be highly effective, and so some initial training and ongoing support is recommended. Most LBT providers start out by reading the literature (available on this website) and then receiving both Basic (one day, or about 6 hours) or Advanced (2 to 3 days, or about 20 hours) of training.
Dr. Daniel LeGoff is a licensed clinical neuropsychologist and the pioneer of LEGO® Therapy. He is a psychology graduate of the University of Winnipeg, Canada, and he received his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia. He specializes in the assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral conditions in infants, children, adolescents, and adults. He is currently a supervisor and consultant based in Pompano Beach, Florida. He developed LEGO®-Based Therapy (LBT) in the mid-1990s after observing two of his young autistic clients playing with LEGO® in his waiting room. He realized that LEGO® could be used as a tool to help children with ASD and other communication challenges improve their social skills and communication abilities. He has authored several books and articles on LBT, and he continues to train and support professionals, parents, and schools who want to use LBT.
